Băneasa vs. Otopeni: Which Pickup Location Suits You
When you fill in the online booking form and reach the “pickup location” step, three options show up: Bucharest city centre, Otopeni, and Băneasa. For most travellers the answer is obvious within a second – you’re landing on a scheduled flight, so you pick Otopeni. But plenty of situations are less clear-cut: you’re arriving on a private aircraft, you already live or work in the northern part of the city, or you simply aren’t sure what “Băneasa” even refers to in a car rental context. It isn’t some airport that vanished off the map, as a surprising number of people assume – it’s an area with a very specific role today.
This guide walks through both locations step by step: what each one actually is, who it suits best, how far each sits from central Bucharest and from the ring road, and – most importantly – how to make the right call in under two minutes. Spoiler: the fleet and the prices on the fleet page stay exactly the same no matter which location you choose, so the decision comes down purely to your own logistics, never to budget.
Otopeni (Henri Coandă) – Romania’s main gateway by air
Henri Coandă International Airport, universally known as “Otopeni” after the town it sits in, is the only airport around Bucharest that handles scheduled commercial flights. This is where Wizz Air, TAROM, Ryanair, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines and every other carrier you’d book for a city break or a business trip actually land and take off. With more than 14 million passengers a year before the pandemic, and traffic that has climbed back steadily since 2022, Otopeni is, in practice, the entry point for the vast majority of tourists and business travellers arriving in Romania by plane.
The airport sits roughly 16-17 km north of central Bucharest, right on DN1 (the Bucharest-Ploiești road), with a direct on-ramp onto the city’s ring road. From the arrivals terminal you can be on the ring road within minutes, which makes Otopeni a genuinely convenient starting point both for people heading into the city and for those driving straight on toward Ploiești, Brașov, or the Black Sea coast without touching urban traffic at all.
Logistically, picking up a car at Otopeni usually means meeting our team in the short-stay parking area, or at a spot confirmed during the phone call you get right after submitting the online booking form. If you want a full walkthrough of the route from the terminal to the car, the best times to arrive, and the mistakes first-time visitors tend to make at this airport, we’ve written a dedicated guide: the complete car rental guide for Otopeni Airport. You can also read more directly on the Otopeni car rental page.
Băneasa – from Bucharest’s first airport to private aviation and a north-side district
Few people realise that Băneasa was actually Bucharest’s very first civil airport – Aurel Vlaicu Airport, opened back in the interwar period and used as the city’s main airport right up until the 1970s, when commercial traffic gradually shifted to Otopeni. Today, Băneasa operates as a general aviation field: private jets, charter flights, helicopters, and aeroclub aircraft. If you booked a flight with a business aviation operator or stepped off a private jet, chances are you landed here rather than at Otopeni.
At the same time, “Băneasa” is also the name of one of the best-known neighbourhoods in northern Bucharest – a residential area of villas and newer developments next to Băneasa Forest, the Bucharest-Ploiești road, and the well-known Băneasa Shopping City mall. It’s a district locals visit constantly for shopping, running in the forest, or business meetings, and it sits just a few kilometres from Herăstrău, Pipera, and Aviației – neighbourhoods packed with company offices and corporate headquarters.
In practice, if you already live or work in the northern part of the city – Pipera, Aviației, Herăstrău, Băneasa itself – picking up your car from our Băneasa location saves you real time, even if you didn’t fly in there at all. It’s simply the closest pickup point to home or the office.
Who should choose which – four real-world scenarios
There’s no single “better” option in the abstract – only the option that fits your situation. Here are the four scenarios we see most often at booking:
- Arriving on a scheduled commercial flight (Wizz Air, TAROM, Ryanair, Lufthansa, and similar) – choose Otopeni, since that’s the airport you’ll actually be landing at.
- Flying in on a private jet, charter flight, or business helicopter – choose Băneasa, the dedicated terminal for private aviation.
- Already living or holding meetings in Pipera, Aviației, Herăstrău, or Băneasa – choose Băneasa purely for convenience, regardless of how you got into the city.
- Need to walk someone directly to the arrivals gate, or need terminal access yourself – Otopeni has full commercial-terminal infrastructure, while Băneasa is more of an airfield with restricted access for the general public.
Real distances to the centre and access to Bucharest’s ring road
The distance gap between the two locations isn’t huge, but it matters during rush hour. From Otopeni to University Square is roughly 16-18 km, covered in 25-40 minutes depending on traffic; from Băneasa, the same destination is only 9-11 km away, so 15-25 minutes under normal conditions. The gap becomes noticeable especially in the morning and late afternoon, when the Bucharest-Ploiești road gets congested along the entire Otopeni stretch.
As for the capital’s ring road, both points have solid access: Otopeni has its own dedicated ramp straight onto the ring road, which suits anyone continuing further toward Ploiești, Brașov, or the A1/A3 motorways without entering the city at all. Băneasa likewise sits just minutes from the northern section of the ring road, but it functions more as a gateway into the city than toward the motorways bypassing Bucharest. If your plan involves a mountain route or a coastal drive starting on day one, Otopeni can be marginally more practical logistically; if you’re staying in the city for at least the first night, the difference essentially disappears.
The fleet and the prices stay exactly the same, whatever location you pick
Whether you choose Otopeni, Băneasa, or the city-centre point, you get access to the identical fleet of 9 models – from the Dacia Logan and Sandero in the Economy class, all the way to the Skoda Superb in Premium Business, and everything in between: Duster, Qashqai, Jogger, Fabia, Octavia, and the Toyota Corolla Hybrid. You can browse every option on the full fleet page.
Pricing works the same way: the online booking system automatically calculates the rate for your chosen period and shows both variants instantly – with deposit (a lower daily rate, with a refundable security deposit held temporarily) and without deposit (no deposit at all, in exchange for a small daily supplement). The pickup location has zero effect on the final price; it only affects how convenient it is for you to reach the car.
Still not sure which to pick? Here’s how to decide fast
If you’re genuinely torn between the two, the simple rule is this: for a standard commercial flight, default to Otopeni – it’s the right call in well over 90% of cases. Only book Băneasa if you know for certain you’re arriving via private or charter aviation, or if you already live or work in the northern part of the city and simply want the closest possible pickup.
If you’re still unsure, don’t just fill in the form at random – you can call our team directly before booking, and either way, once you submit your online booking request, you’ll get a confirmation phone call where you can change the location without any hassle if your plans shift in the meantime.
One question we get fairly often is whether you can pick up the car at one location and drop it off at another – for instance, picking up at Otopeni on arrival and returning the car at Băneasa before a private departure flight, or the other way around. The answer is yes, it’s a normal option and doesn’t require anything beyond a standard booking; you simply mention both locations in the form or over the phone, and our team handles the rest. It’s particularly useful for people combining a holiday with a business trip and switching flight types on the return leg.
Pick the location that actually fits your trip – Bucharest, Otopeni, or Băneasa – and complete the online booking form in under two minutes: you’ll see the exact price, in both variants, with or without deposit, before you confirm anything. And if you’d like to compare the cars first, take a look at our entire fleet and pick the model that best fits your route.
